- 1 cup toor dal
- 2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon ghee or oil

- 1 teaspoon grated ginger

How to make Ven Pongal
There are many different ways to make Ven Pongal, but this is a basic recipe that produces a delicious and hearty dish.
- 1 cup rice
- 1 cup moong dal (split yellow lentils)
- 4 cups water
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 medium sized potato, peeled and cut into small pieces
- 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing) (optional)
- 10-12 curry leaves, finely chopped (optional)
1. Wash the rice and moong dal together in plenty of water. Drain and set aside.
2. In a large saucepan or pot, bring the water to a boil. Add the rice and moong dal, and cook until they are soft and have broken down somewhat (about 15-20 minutes).
3. Add the ghee, cumin seeds, potato pieces, green chili, asafoetida and curry leaves (if using), and mix well. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the potatoes are cooked through.

6. Finally, add the boiling water and stir gently to combine everything evenly. Check for seasoning and adjust if necessary.

2. Drain the water and pressure cook the rice and dal with 3 cups of water for 3 whistles in a medium flame.
3. Wait till the pressure subsides, open the cooker and mash the rice and dal well with a ladle.
4. Add the required salt and mix well again.
5. Heat ghee in a small frying pan, add cumin seeds, crushed black pepper, fry for a few seconds till they splutter.
6. Add this tempering to the prepared pongal along with ginger chopped finely, green chillies and curry leaves. Mix well again so that everything is incorporated well.
7. Ven Pongal is now ready to be served hot with some chutney or sambar on the side.
